Eau de Henri is a collage homage to Henri de Toulouse Lautrec. When Mary Lewey crossed paths with a posterbook of his works, it prompted the collage artist to work at a larger scale than usual. The limited palette of Henri’s prints prompted her to implement unfamiliar color combinations. At first, Lewey taped the posters to the wall in her apartment and observed. Helping her to overcome a creative block, the prints gave her permission to experiment. As the poster collages evolved, the artist imagined more possibilities. Eau de Henri is a culmination of these new ideas, each including Lautrec. Some images in the collection are busy with lots of layers. Others are more sparse and let the eye wander instead of dart. Lewey embraces both and appreciates the way they allowed her to see in shapes and think in color.
