“Threads: Memory and Identity” by Lauren Leone opens Saturday, April 6, at 7 pm, at the Washington Street Gallery, 321 Washington Street, Somerville. This exhibit of illustrative embroideries explores personal identity, using hand and machine stitching on a range of fabrics, including old family linens. Leone reflects on the hazy subjectivity of past experience, how memories shift and take on new meanings over time, and how hers have impacted her identity as an art therapist, daughter, wife, and woman. For this recent work, Leone began with blind contour drawings, upon which she then carefully embroidered. The contrast of the quickly drawn illustration, which catches glimpses into individual moments, and the deliberate and meditative pace of the embroidery parallels the differing speeds at which personal moments are experienced, encoded, remembered, reflected upon, and sometimes, forgotten. The exhibit is on view April 6 through April 27 on Saturdays 12-4 p.m., and by appointment.
