ON VIEW:

In Gretchen Graham’s Unsee This, black and white film photographs are not only what they seem at first glance. Like events unfolding in dreams, or images seen in clouds, the photographs in this show require interpretation to reveal the latent images. The metallic sand of Block Island, footsteps in the snow, and water stains on the MBTA subway walls all reveal hidden shapes and figures.

“I’m a visual storyteller by nature, and in this case I found a different way to tell a story! I found it was a good way to bring some fun into my work that is not normally there,” says Graham.

“When I’m photographing on the street or in the subway, I am bringing you my truth of something — an attempt to illuminate what I feel is the real nature of the subject. Though I have my own interpretation of what I see in this set of photographs, I want people to tell me what their truth is. And I want people to have fun with it; this is an interactive experience in the way my other photography is not. The viewer is more of a participant than usual, which I find gratifying.”

Unsee This is open to the public Saturdays, August 10-31 from Noon-4pm—and by appointment—at the Washington Street gallery, 321 Washington Street in Somerville, MA. The opening reception is Friday, August 9 from 6:30-10pm.
