New paintings by Maggie Cedarstrom. This body of work is a healing project of pandemic emergence. Portraits of new friends and colleagues are warm gestures of reverence and thanks for new human stories after long solitude. These portraits are presented in tandem with figure paintings completed before and during the pandemic. These self-portraits were an act of healing from within, completed in seclusion. As I returned to work in person and meet the people represented in these portraits, a new kind of healing began for me. This project is a journey from self to other, a great relief in newness.

 Invitation is what I was given to produce these new paintings. I was invited to bear witness. I am also inviting you the viewer to bear witness to my healing space with this work.

Artist Statement:
My work is an exploration of the body’s expressive and constructive capabilities. I create images of the body making and reacting to emotional space. I like to demonstrate how gesture and muscular tension process and communicate internal dialogue. I use domestic objects and spaces, patterns and floral motifs to give the gestures of my figures context and projection.
